Sporting Visitors and Trips

At Greenside, we often have visits from successful athletes, companies visiting school or the chance to go on trips to sporting places. Below are some of our favourite memories from their visits. To read about some of our older visits please click here.

Stockport County Visit

On Monday 24th February 2020 we had a very special assembly from our friends at Stockport County. We learnt all about the club's history, met star player Darron Stephenson and had a special visit from Vernon Bear, who made friends with Willow our school dog. The children were also given free tickets for the next home game! You can buy tickets for Stockport games and book on their soccer schools by visiting https://www.stockportcounty.com/

Matt Donohue Referee Visit

On Wednesday 16th October 2019 we were very lucky to welcome Championship Referee Matt Donohue to Greenside for a Special Assembly. Matt, a former teacher, informed the children about his journey to be a referee at such a high level as well as impressing the children with his competition.

Brownlee Triathlon

On Monday 23rd September 2019 we had a very exciting opportunity to travel to Hough End Leisure centre to take part in a triathlon. The children all earned medals and t-shirts for their amazing swimming, cycling and running and even got to meet Olympic Medalist Jonny Brownlee, capping off an already fantastic morning.

Mindful Bunny Yoga

As part of Children's Mental Health 2020 week we had a visit from Caron from the Mindful Bunny Yoga company who treated our year 3 children to a fantastic yoga session which worked on children's flexibility, well-being and mindfulness. It was hugely enjoyable and we can't wait to have Caron in school again soon! You can see more of Caron's session by clicking here.

Kelly Massey Visit

During National School Sports week 2019 we had the amazing opportunity to have Olympic medal winning runner Kelly Massey to come into school to give a masterclass to children in 3DS. They were chosen because they were the first class in the school where everyone completed the Tour of Tameside 7 mile running challenge. She gave children loads of great tips and put them through their paces. Find your nearest athletics club by clicking here.

England Girls Football Festival and Game

On Friday 1st April 2019 we had an amazing opportunity to play in a football festival at the Manchester City's Eithiad Campus before getting to watch England Women take on Canada at a sold out Manchester City Academy Stadium. The girls had an incredible experience and are more excited than ever to play football at Greenside. Thankyou to the FA and Tameside SSP for the fantastic opportunity. Tameside Boxing Competition with Anthony Crolla

On Wednesday 15th May 2019, we travelled with our boxing squad to Oasis Broadoak to take part in the first ever Tameside boxing competitions. Our children were already excited, and became even more excited when they realised that they were going to be judged by world champion boxer and local hero Anthony Crolla. Anthony Crolla was particularly impressed with Alex from Year 4, awarding him a bronze medal for bagwork and an incredible gold medal in the shadowboxing. It was a team competition too, and Greenside finished in 3rd place. After the competition was finished, Anthony was nice enough to have pictures with the children and sign their newly awarded Schools Boxing Association bronze badges as well as letting the children hold his world title belt.

Determination Action Sports Festival

On the last Friday in February we were very fortunate to be able to take 11 lucky year 4 children to the huge Greystone Sports arena in Salford which hosts all kinds of extreme sports events such as parkour, skateboarding, trampolining and foam pits.

The children had the chance to try three different action sports at this amazing venue and showed huge amounts of bravery and determination in each one. If you would like to visit Greystone Action Sports please check out their website here.

Georgia Taylor Brown Visit

On Thursday 21st November 2019, we were very lucky to have world triathlon star Georgia Taylor Brown in to visit our year 4 classes. As well as asking some interesting questions about the Tokyo Olympic hopeful, we got to see her collection of medals and trophies. We also got to see a video of her winning the world triathlon series event in front of a crowd of thousands earlier.

National Football Museum Visit 2019

As part of the celebrations around the FIFA Women's World Cup 2019 our year 5 girl footballers got to visit the National Football Museum in Manchester. As well as looking at the fascinating exhibits we were treated to a performance of The Beautiful Game performed by Next Door Dance. Find out about the National Football Museum by clicking here.

Lancashire Cricket Coaching

During the Summer 2 term in 2019 we were very lucky to have some expert coaching from the coaches from Lancashire Cricket Foundation. This was inspiring for the children in the middle of a World Cup and Ashes summer and hopefully inspired a new generation of Ben Stokes, Joffra Archer and Heather Knight.
