Tameside School Games Volleyball finalists

On the March 7th we took 3 teams to Fairfield High School where we were competing in the heat to try to qualify for the Tameside final the week after. Once again we had 2 year 5 teams and a year 6 team but it was the year 5’s who did the best with one team finishing as runners up with 2 wins and a loss and the other team doing even better and winning 3 out of 4 games to reach the Tameside final. This took place 5 days later and our children put in even better performances against really tough teams. In the first 2 games we lost very narrowly by 2 points and 3 points respectively but in the third we managed to beat an unbeaten Fairfield team 11-10 and round off a super evening by finishing 3rd in the group which was super achievement.

Badminton and Dodgeball Festivals

On Friday 22nd March we took two teams of keen badminton players, some of whom were trying the sport for the first time, to Great Academy Ashton to play against pupils from other schools. It wasn’t just the adults getting involved though as Mr Ellis and Miss Stonehewer played against, and beat the teachers from ST John Fisher. On Wednesday 2nd April we took 3 very excited teams of Dodgeball players from year 3 and 4 to take part in a festival at Rayner Stephens. The teams, nearly all of whom come to before school Dodgeball clubs, all did brilliantly with great skill on show and one girl being praised by staff from another school for Teamwork and Honesty, something for us all to be proud of.

Tameside Orienteering

On Tuesday 9th July, we took part in the first ever Tameside SSP orienteering competition that took place at St Damien’s RC College on their newly installed orienteering course. Both of our teams took some time in the first game to get used to the skills needed, but they improved and got to grips with it really well for the second and third games, so much so that when the final results were added up and all the clues had been found one of our teams finished 4th out of 6 and the other achieved an even better 2nd place finish earning silver medals.

Tameside Boxing Competition with Anthony Crolla

On Wednesday 15th May 2019, we travelled with our boxing squad to Oasis Broadoak to take part in the first ever Tameside boxing competitions. Our children were already excited, and became even more excited when they realised that they were going to be judged by world champion boxer and local hero Anthony Crolla. Anthony Crolla was particularly impressed with Alex from Year 4, awarding him a bronze medal for bagwork and an incredible gold medal in the shadowboxing. It was a team competition too, and Greenside finished in 3rd place. After the competition was finished, Anthony was nice enough to have pictures with the children and sign their newly awarded Schools Boxing Association bronze badges as well as letting the children hold his world title belt.

Greater Manchester Winter School Games Lacrosse

After the fantastic result in the Tameside competition we got the chance to attend the Greater Manchester Winter Games. The children were all very excited for their day out of school as we headed to the Manchester Regional Athletics centre for the opening ceremony. After the ceremony we went to the Armitage centre to play Lacrosse against schools from across Greater Manchester. The standard was very high and we found it tough at first but improved massively over the course of the day and finished up as 10th overall in our region.

Tameside Lacrosse Runners Up

On March 14th we took two teams of year 5’s to the annual Tameside Lacrosse Competition that was held at Great Academy Ashton. We faced Millbrook in the semi-finals and produced a great performance to win 3-1 and reach the final where we played Manchester Road. Our A team lost their first game despite having lots of chances and drew their second game even though once again we had the best chances. In the third game we finally scored two great baskets and won the game meaning it went down to the last game to try to get through. We were very close but ended up drawing to finish second and just miss out on the final.

On Wednesday 19th June, we headed to St. John Fisher who were hosting the second ever Ultimate Frisbee competition against 13 other teams who were very excited to show off their frisbee skills. We had two teams who had been practising hard and were ready to take on the other teams. As well as playing games trying to score points and win the games, the competition was scored on several things: how well teams knew the rules, how well they worked as a team and if they avoided body contact. This was scored by the other teams at the end of each game, so we tried to make sure we were showing off all our School Games Values. At the end, the points awarded for playing in the spirit of the game were added up and it was revealed that we finished in 3rd place, claiming the bronze medals!

Tameside Snow School Games Winners

Tameside SSP and Chill Factore gave Greenside, along with 8 other schools, a fantastic opportunity on Monday 25th March as we had the chance to take part in the Tameside School Snow Games 2019. This gave the chance for 10 of our year 5 children to take part in such varied events as Climbing, sledging, igloo building and skiing. It wasn’t all fun though as we worked with our Friends at Moorside to earn points throughout the day for speed and accuracy in each event in a bid to become champions. When the points were added up it was revealed Greenside, along with Moorside, were named Tameside Snow School Games winners 2019.

Greater Manchester Boys Futsal

On our first day back after half term our boys were straight into action as we played in Greater Manchester Futsal Championship  We knew it would be a tough task and played our first game against fellow Tameside school Manchester Road but we won a great game 3-2. In our second game it was tight and tense and finished 0-0 before a great win in game 3 got us back on track. In our final game against St Michael’s we went 1-0 down before scoring an equaliser to make it 1-1, after which we couldn’t find the winning goal. We had to settle for second place to Manchester Road who won their remaining games to finish on 9 points.

Greater Manchester Girls Futsal

5 days after the boys had been to Platt Fields we were back, this time with our girls team who had qualified for the Greater Manchester Futsal Championships as Tameside champions. However the standard was very high and despite being well in the games we lost our first two fixture s 2-0 to leave ourselves an uphill task. The girls picked up their performances well and managed to have great wins in their last two games to just miss out on the semi finals, finishing 3rd in their group.

Tameside Cross Country Championships

On a chilly Saturday morning in January we had nearly 20 children representing Greenside at the Tameside Cross Country Championships. After some great performances we managed to have 4 qualifiers for the Tameside team at the Greater Manchester Cross Country Championships, a huge achievement for the school. Ben from year 4 also received a trophy for coming second in the under 9's boys race.

Handball and Hockey Festivals

Tameside Sports also host festivals where children get to compete and experience different sports without there being an overall winner. This means the children get chance to represent school without focusing solely on the end result. This term there have been festivals for hockey and handball.  Children participated in a number of hockey games which were enjoyed by all of those that attended, the event also helped them to learn the skills and rules of the game.In the Handball festival many children got to experience the sport for the first time as well as representing school.

Tag Rugby Final

On Tuesday 9th October we played in our first School Games final of the year at Ashton Rugby Club. We lost of first game to eventual second placed Moorside but then rebounded back with a convincing win over Micklehurst. We then drew in a pulsating encounter with Russell Scott before losing our last game to finish 3rd in the group of 5. This meant that we missed out on the semi finals but was a great effort by all the team.

Tag Rugby Festival

For our first sports event of the year we took an excited group of children to take part in a Tag Rugby festival at Aldwinians Rugby Club. We took lots of children who represented school for the time and they did us proud playing well and earning praise from the organisers who said they were a "Credit to the School" Well done everyone.
